FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the most frequently asked questions that we receive at Blakesberg & Company:

Q. I have never actually used a CPA to prepare my tax return before. What should I expect from Blakesberg & Company?

A. First, we will schedule some time for us to get to know you better. It is important that we understand you and your business before we begin filling out forms. We will discuss each form of the return and ask you specific questions in order to ensure that all items are properly filled out. We will prepare your tax return and call you when it is ready. When you receive your return, you will be given an itemized bill for payment at that time. Your return will be ready for your signature and will include a mailing envelope with the correct IRS address, so all you need to do is worry about mailing it on time.

Q. What type of tax returns do you prepare?

A. Our accountants can prepare any business or personal tax return. We also do any state tax return that you will need. In addition, we will prepare all Tangible and Intangible tax returns. We will be happy to discuss the forms you will need and a price range when you come in for your initial consultation.

Q. What do you charge to do a tax return?

A. Our fees are based on the type of work and the forms required. Obviously, the more complex the return and number of forms required, the greater the cost of preparing the return. After our initial consultation, we will be prepare a detailed price quote for you once we determine which forms you will need to file.

Q. What records do I need to bring in to your office for you to properly be able to prepare my tax return?

A. This is an excellent question. Obviously, the more detailed information you can provide to us, the more we can help assess your financial situation and possibly help you maximize your tax savings/minimize your tax liability. At a minimum, we need to review and evaluate all sources of income and expenses in order to accurately prepare your return. If you have questions about whether or not you should bring something in for us to look at, please call us in advance of your consultation and we will be happy to discuss any specific items with you.

Q. I think my previous accountant made an error on my last return filed. What recourse do I have?

A. Don't Panic! First and foremost, let's sit down and talk about the error, and evaluate the cause of the problem. Once we identify the error, we will prepare an amended return for you.

Q. Unfortunately, my wife loves to throw stuff away, and I can't find a tax return from a couple of years ago. How long do you keep copies of the return you prepared for me?

A. We keep all copies of any return we prepare for you. We will be happy to furnish you with any copy for any year or forward to a third party with your permission. Many times our clients will call for us to fax a copy of a prior year return to a bank or mortgage processor when refinancing a home. As for the situation with your wife, you are on your own there buddy!

Q. How long should I retain my tax records and returns?

A. At Blakesberg and Company, we STRONGLY recommend that you keep all records for a minimum of 7 years from the filing date of the return. This ensures that you will have receipts and records in the event of an IRS audit or a change to your tax return.
